Struggling with selecting drainage grates for your UK property? Avoid costly repairs with expert guidance on materials, load ratings, and maintenance.
Wireless thermostats are innovative and handy devices that are starting to feature in more and more properties across the UK, and it’s no surprise why. Home and building owners are learning how this technology can provide many benefits that improve the heating in your establishment.
Here at Greenstar, we have devised a comprehensive guide to wireless thermostats, including the advantages of installing one, plus boiler compatibility. Through our three decades of experience providing boiler services across the south of the UK, we feel we are well equipped to explain to you everything you need to know about wireless thermostats. Read on to learn more about these devices and how Greenstar can help with the installation.
A wireless thermostat is a digital device that can inform you of the current temperature of its surroundings. This is achieved through electronic sensors that communicate with the boiler to provide the ideal room temperature for yourself.
There are many reasons why you would want to install a wireless thermostat for your boiler. The following are the key reasons why you would switch to the digital option.
You can easily install wireless thermostats anywhere you want in your property. For instance, they can be installed in the coldest area of a room to ensure adequate heat all year round. They also don’t have to be mounted like old traditional thermostats, either.
The simplicity of a wireless thermostats is best highlighted by the fact that you can monitor and control your heating system anywhere, by using an app on your smartphone or tablet. This is perfect for winter when you want rooms to be warm and inviting prior to your arrival.
Wireless thermostats give property owners much more flexibility when compared to older thermostats, as they are much easier to control – you can adjust the heating whenever they want.
Such flexibility promotes an energy efficient approach to heating, which can lead to considerable cost savings – energy bills can be less if the heating is only used as and when required (as opposed to heating a room up when unoccupied).
Two of the most popular wireless thermostats are Google’s Nest and British Gas’ Hive systems. These smart thermostats are rich in features to help add heat efficiencies to your property. But how do the two stack up against each other? Let’s find out.
Both Nest and Hive offer very similar levels of remote control over your heating. Both thermostats can be connected to mobile devices (e.g. smartphones and laptops) allowing ease of control, regardless of whether you’re in the building or not. Also, both Nest and Hive allow temperature and hot water settings to be monitored and controlled via the app.
Nest and Hive both also feature automatic temperature settings, enabling you to set your heating to certain weather settings meaning you’ll never have to enter a building that’s too cold. They also have voice control, utilising Amazon Echo, Google Assistant and/or Siri (depending on the device chosen).
Zoned heating refers to breaking your property into different areas (or “zones”), each controlled separately by the wireless thermostat.
The main (yet subtle) difference between the two devices is that Nest allows for up to 20 heating zones across two properties. Hive, on the other hand only allows up to three heating zones.
Both Nest and Hive are compatible with a wide range of gas, oil and electric boilers, but be aware that Nest are only compatible with renewable heating systems.
Hive works with the bast majority of UK gas and LPG central heating systems. Additionally, Hive works with most oiler and electric boilers, and can replace existing thermostats.
There are, however a number of Honeywell, Vaillant and Worcester Bosch units that are incompatible with Hive. See here for more information on Hive compatibility.
Nest thermostats have been designed to work with a variety of heating systems, including system and heat-only boilers and biomass boilers. The best way to find out if your chosen boiler is compatible is through the Nest Compatibility Checker.
