Struggling with selecting drainage grates for your UK property? Avoid costly repairs with expert guidance on materials, load ratings, and maintenance.
As a property owner, it’s key that you sort any minor problems in and around your building as soon as you find them. Failure to do so could lead to significant issues down the line. This also holds true for any plumbing concerns, especially if you start to hear a gurgling sound coming from your drain. But what exactly causes this gurgling sound, and how can you deal with it?
Experienced plumbing installation experts Greenstar are on hand to explain to you why your plumbing is gurgling and how we can help.

That gurgling sound is caused by air bubbles forcing their way up from inside your drain. When a blockage forms in your pipes, air pockets can form around the clog, causing the trapped air to make its way up as water flows down from your sink or bath. This process is better known as air displacement and indicates that your drain is gurgling.
Gurgling sounds can come from all types of water fixtures – sinks, baths, toilets, and even floor drains. Read on to learn what causes the blockages that create this ill-favoured sound.
The main cause of your plumbing’s gurgling is due a to partially or completely clogged drain. There are notable differences between the two, and we think it’s important that you can tell them apart.
A partial clog will lead to a complete one if not treated in time. The water will be draining slower than usual. This can be dealt with by drain cleaner, but this may not always fix the issue.
When water begins to flow up to your sink or bathtub instead of draining, then it’s almost certain that your drain is completely clogged. This can be due to a number of reasons, such as dirt, hair, oil and toilet paper stuck in or just below the drain.
If multiple drains are clogged, however then your sewer line could be the issue. In this scenario we recommend contacting our emergency plumbing team to resolve the problem right away.
The sewer line is a large pipe that carries all wastewater from your house out to the main sewer line or septic tank. If the sewer line is blocked, all your house drains will be affected. When flushing the toilet, if sewage starts to overflow from any basement drains then it’s more than likely that your sewer line is blocked.
Sewer lines tend to be clogged because of broken pipes, bathroom products and tree roots. Note with the latter, tree roots can grow into older lines in search of water. This could lead to a severe break in your sewer line and substantial repair costs as a result.
The vent system functions to pass air through drains without disrupting water flow. Such systems are connected to all house fixtures and are released through the roof. If you hear drain gurgling, it could be because a vent system pipe is blocked. This also could lead to your plumbing not working properly.
A P-Trap is a curved piece of plumbing pipe found under water drainage fixtures (like your sinks and toilets). It serves to protect your house from odours by creating a watertight seal that prevents gas from coming out of your drains.
Check when flushing the toilet or flowing water down a drain – if you smell sewage, you should look to replace your P-Trap.
Fixing your plumbing requires the right tools, knowledge and experience. Tackling the problem yourself can lead to making it worse, causing considerable damage to your home’s plumbing system.
