Our Gas Safe registered boiler engineers explain what it means if your boiler is turning itself on and off frequently – and when you should have it looked at by an engineer.
When a combi boiler fires up and then turns off again, it’s likely to be the preheat function kicking in. This is simply the boiler making sure there’s some hot water ready to be sent to the taps when you need it, and it’s nothing to be concerned about.
However, if the boiler keeps repeatedly firing up and then quickly turning off again, this could be a sign that It’s short cycling. This is something to keep an eye out for, as it could make your bills more expensive and cause damage to your boiler in the long term.
During times when your heating system doesn’t need to be on, heat will naturally escape the unit and the heated water in the heat exchanger will cool down.
All units have an internal thermostat that keeps track of the temperature inside the boiler. What happens when a boiler is short cycling is that the thermostat detects that the water in the heat exchanger is cooling and, even if the temperature in your home hasn’t dropped, it fires up the boiler to reheat the water.
Reheating this small amount of water back to the thermostat’s temperature setting doesn’t take long, which is why the boiler doesn’t take long to turn off again. If this keeps happening repeatedly, it means that the boiler is using energy but not actually heating your home. This is bad for your bills, the environment and, ultimately, your boiler. If the heat exchanger breaks entirely, it can be costly to repair.
There are several common reasons your boiler might be short cycling, which we’ve broken down below:
Ignoring a boiler that is short cycling can lead to higher heating bills, more regular faults that become increasingly costly to repair, or a full boiler replacement being needed sooner than it should.
