It starts as a faint clunk, easy to miss over the kettle. A few days later, it’s a rumble, then a bang that’s loud enough to make someone jump and ask what that was.
This is how most people end up wondering why their boiler is making a noise. The trouble is, it rarely arrives out of nowhere; it builds, and by the time it’s loud enough to notice, it’s been building for a while. Left long enough, a minor issue like trapped air or limescale can turn into a breakdown or, in rarer cases, something that needs a boiler repair the same day.

A working boiler isn’t silent. You’ll usually hear a soft hum from the fan, a faint gurgle as water moves through the pipes, and a quiet click when it fires up or switches off. These are part of normal operation and nothing to worry about.
What you’re listening for is a change. If your boiler suddenly starts making a noise it didn’t make before, or a familiar sound gets noticeably louder, that’s the signal something’s shifted. The change itself is often more telling than the noise alone.
Most boiler noises fall into a handful of categories, and each one points to a different cause:
Kettling deserves a closer look, because it’s one of the most common calls we get. The clue is in the name. Hard water contains dissolved calcium and magnesium, and over time, these minerals form scale deposits on the heat exchanger, shortening its life and reducing efficiency [1].
Water struggles to circulate properly, it overheats in places, and you hear that rumbling or banging as steam pockets form. The fix is usually a power flush, which clears the sludge and restores circulation. An annual boiler service catches this kind of build-up early, often before you hear anything at all.
Most boiler noises are annoying rather than dangerous, but a few warrant immediate attention. If your boiler is making a noise alongside any of these signs, turn it off and call an engineer straight away:
That last point matters more than people realise. Carbon monoxide is colourless, odourless and tasteless, produced when carbon-based fuels don’t burn properly. You won’t smell or see it, but a change in your boiler’s sound, along with headaches or nausea, is worth treating seriously [2].
A carbon monoxide alarm helps, but Gas Safe Register describes an audible CO alarm as a good second line of defence, not something that should replace an annual safety check from a registered engineer. If in doubt, turn the boiler off, open a window, and get it looked at before using it again.
