For your taps to flow water sufficiently, the right water pressure needs to be provided in the pipes. This especially holds true in multi-storey buildings, where the water pressure needs to be maintained on the upper floors.
Every tap in your property must be designed to account for pipe water pressure and adequate temperature. The tap must also shut off the pipeline completely when it’s not running. This is achieved through a tap’s valve disc, which closes the pipeline and only allows waterflow if the valve (or tap) is open.
It’s usually little nuances and warn out parts that cause a tap to drip uncontrollably. These include:
Rubber seals within the tap can build limescale and over time can cause your taps to become leaky. When warn out, they become loose and wear down at the edges. This is caused by constant water pressure leading to wear and tear.
In a similar vein, should your tap utilise a single lever mixer, then the built-in cartridge may also have a build-up of limescale.
We outline the steps you can take to repair your dripping tap below, but should you need further assistance we operate an emergency plumbing repair service and we will do our best to resolve your dripping tap issue within 2 hours.
To avoid any further water mess, cut the water supply from the mainline.
Use a flathead screwdriver to remove the decorative knobs.
This may require lubricant to help unscrew and remove the faucet handle off the stem. Use a spanner to loosen the packing nut prior to removal. Do note that some stems pop out and others need to be twisted off from the valve.
Replace any parts that are damaged. If there aren’t any, then inspect and replace the O-ring and washers, ensuring an exact fit.
Once you’ve reassembled your tap, test to see if the leak has stopped.
