Repair or replace? 4 signs it’s time for a new boiler

If you’re weighing up whether to repair or replace your malfunctioning boiler, here are a few signs it could be time to get a new one.

1.    Your boiler needs regular repairs

It’s recommended that you service your boiler once a year. If you find that you’re having to call an engineer out more than this, it’s worth calculating how much you’re spending on repairs. If you’re spending a lot on regular repairs, it would almost certainly be more cost-effective to buy a new boiler.

2.    You’re spending more on your energy bills

If you’ve noticed that your energy bills are creeping up without explanation, it may be because your boiler isn’t as energy efficient as it used to be. Boiler energy efficiency is rated from A to G, with A-rated boilers working at 90% energy efficiency or above and G-rated dropping to below 70% efficiency.

Upgrading from a G-rated boiler to a grade A boiler could save you as much as £200 a year so, if your boiler isn’t performing as well as it used to, it could be worth considering a replacement.

3.    It’s difficult to get hold of replacement parts

It can be difficult to source replacement parts for older boilers, making repairs more costly. If it’s becoming expensive and tricky to replace faulty parts, it could be time to say goodbye to your boiler. It’s important to consider whether the cost of upkeep is worth it, or if it would be more cost-effective in the long term to invest in a new boiler.

4.    Your boiler is over 10 years old

The 10-year mark is usually when boilers start to become less efficient. It’s also at this point that replacement parts can become rarer and more expensive. With boilers over ten years old, it often makes more sense to replace rather than repair. It may well be more economical to upgrade your boiler rather than keep paying for regular, expensive repairs.
