5 reasons why your boiler is leaking

Why is my boiler leaking?

Realising that your boiler is suddenly leaking gas or water can be a serious concern for homeowners, especially when approaching the winter months. A substantial leak may even be beyond repair and could lead to a complete boiler replacement.

Finding the direct source is the first step in sorting out the leak, but when you don’t know what to look for it can be difficult to diagnose the problem.

Before you call a plumber, our expert boiler engineers have provided a guide to explain where boilers leak along with some checks that you can do at home.

Boiler leaks are usually caused by internal leaks and with our gas-safe engineers, Greenstar specialise in boiler repair to get your household heating up and running again.

Where do boilers leak from?

Boilers can leak from the bottom and the sides, depending on whether gas or water is escaping.

Gas leak from boiler

Gas leaks are hard to locate because you’re reliant on the smell to determine where it’s coming from. What’s more a gas leak is very dangerous, especially as not all gases are odourless (such as carbon monoxide).

In any case, if you suspect a gas leak call Greenstar on 01202 355 344 – our 24-hour emergency boiler service will help you sort the problem out as soon as possible. In the meantime, you should immediately open all windows and doors and turn off any naked flames (e.g. cigarettes).

Water leak from boiler

Water leaks are more commonly found from the underneath of the boiler. Unfortunately, a water leak is no small issue and could require urgent repair. Read on to learn the causes of leaks and how Greenstar can help.

Why is my boiler leaking gas?

The main causes of a gas leak are faulty appliances, incorrect installation and poor maintenance.

To help reduce gas leaks in the future, we recommend servicing your boiler once a year and our high quality boiler service can keep your appliance in good working order for as long as possible.

Why is my boiler leaking water?

There are a number of reasons why water is dripping from your boiler, and these are mostly caused by issues with internal components such as the boiler dripping water from the pipes and the valves. We’ve outlined the reasons why your boiler is dripping water below.

Corrosion

Corrosion is one of the most common reasons for a boiler leaking water, and this is especially true if you notice that the water leaking is coming from the bottom of the boiler – this usually happens when the pipes underneath your system have corroded over time, which is common with older boilers. If the water is not visible directly underneath the boiler, you can check for this type of leak by simply feeling around the bottom of the system. If there is a leak you will notice a wet patch.

High pressure

Sometimes boilers leak from excess pressure. When the pressure is too high, the pipes can become overwhelmed and water will eventually start to leak. This issue could have a negative affect on your central heating so it’s an important check. To do this, simply observe the gauge which is just located on the front of most boilers. If the pressure is too high for your boiler, its worth consulting your boiler’s handbook as this can often be a quick DIY fix.

Poor installation

If you find a water leak coming from your boiler after recently having it installed, that problem may lie with the way that it was initially installed. Poor installation commonly leads to water leaking from the pipe fittings. To avoid this, you should only allow a gas safe registered engineer to install your new boiler.

Wear and tear

Unfortunately, boilers don’t last forever and are just as susceptible to wear and tear as just about any man-engineered system. If your boiler is older than 10 years, it’s probably time to consider installing a new one that will not only be much less likely to leak but also increase the energy efficiency of your home, helping to save you money on your bills.

Water temperature

Boilers are fitted with a temperature control valve which monitors the temperature of the water within the boiler and stops it from getting too high. Any leak from the temperature valve suggests that the boiler temperature is too high and could lead to scalding water coming out of the taps.

Boiler replacement does not have to be expensive. At Greenstar we offer 0% finance deals on new boilers and payment terms of up to 10 years – as well as boiler servicing and repairs. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with our friendly team today on 01202 355 344.
