What Is Drain Jetting?

It's easy to forget when you're stepping into the shower or going for a dip in the pool, but water can be an incredibly powerful force – at a high enough pressure, it can even cut through steel!

That's what makes drain jetting such an effective method for clearing blocked drains. The process involves using a concentrated, high-pressure stream of water to remove debris, sediment, grease, tree roots, and other obstructions. The water pressures can range from 1,500 to over 4,000 pounds per square inch (psi), making it excellent at clearing away even the most stubborn blockages.

This process leaves your drains clean and unobstructed, allowing water to flow freely – without resorting to harsh and environmentally harmful chemicals.

How Does Drain Jetting Work?

During drain jetting, the high-pressure water jet is inserted into the blocked drain or pipe. The water stream is activated and travels through the system, scouring the inner walls while dislodging and breaking up the accumulated material. The debris is then flushed away through the drainage system.

Drain jetting might seem simple, but it’s not as easy as hitting the ‘spray’ button! The jets used are extremely powerful, so there's a risk of damaging the pipes or compromising safety if used by untrained hands. That’s why you should always let the professionals handle the task for you – they’ll have the skills, experience, and equipment to carry it out safely and effectively.

Our High-Pressure Drain Jetting Process

Wondering how we'll go about clearing your drains? Read on for our step-by-step breakdown!

  1. Once you contact us, we'll begin by surveying your pipes to identify the cause of the blockage. This will help us determine the most suitable approach to clear it.
  2. If we decide that drain jetting is the best solution, we'll offer you a fixed rate quote. If you're happy with it, we'll schedule a time that works for you. In urgent cases, our 24/7 emergency service allows us to start work within a few hours.
  3. To prevent unintentional damage, we'll clear the area before proceeding. Then, we'll carefully insert the high-pressure jetting hose into the drain or sewer line through the access point, selecting the appropriate nozzle for the job.
  4. With the jetting machine activated, we'll gradually increase the pressure to the right level based on the drain's material and the severity of the blockage. The high-pressure water will effectively break up the clog and wash away debris and buildup from the pipe walls.
  5. We follow a systematic approach, making sure the entire length of the drain is covered. We'll adjust the angle and direction of the nozzle accordingly.
  6. Our team will continue jetting the drain until the water runs clear, indicating that the blockage has been completely cleared, and the pipe is now clean.
  7. Upon completing the drain jetting process, we'll verify that the blockage is entirely gone and that the drain is free from any obstructions. After that, we'll retract the jetting hose and clean the work area.

Drain Jetting FAQs

Unless you’re an experienced plumber who knows their way around high–pressure jets, you shouldn’t risk doing it yourself. Drain jetting can be a complex and potentially dangerous task, so it’s essential to have the necessary knowledge, training, and safety equipment before attempting it. It’s always best to hire a professional plumber or drain cleaning service to handle it for you.

Drain jetting is safe for most pipes, but there are some exceptions. Older pipes may be made of materials like cast iron or clay, which might be more susceptible to damage than modern PVC or ABS pipes.

If your pipes are already in poor condition with a lot of deterioration or corrosion, they may not be strong enough to withstand the force of the water during drain jetting.

Not sure if your pipes will be strong enough? Don’t worry. We’ll carry out a thorough inspection before we get started, which will let us identify any weak spots, blockages, or potential issues that may affect the safety of the process.

The exact cost all depends on the size and scope of the job. Generally, you can expect to pay around £150 to £200.

We'll make sure to give you a clear and fixed price quote before we start, so you'll know exactly what to expect. No matter how long it takes to clear the drain or if any unexpected work pops up, the price will stay the same. We also don't charge for call outs!

It’s hard to give an exact number for how often you should get your drains jetted, as it all hinges on the drain condition, property type, usage, and surrounding environment. For residential properties, a general rule of thumb is to have drains jetted once a year or every other year. Commercial or industrial drains might need more frequent jetting due to heavier usage.

On top of the regular schedule, keep an eye out for signs of blockage, such as slow drainage, gurgling sounds, foul odours, or recurrent backups. If any of these issues occur, it's time to jet the drains regardless of the regular schedule.

Yes, drain jetting is suitable for both indoor and outdoor drains.

It can be used to clear clogs in various indoor drain systems, including sinks, toilets, showers, bathtubs, and floor drains. It’s particularly useful for dealing with stubborn blockages that traditional methods like using a plunger may not fully resolve.

Drain jetting is also suitable for outdoor drains, such as those found in stormwater drains, gutters, downspouts, and sewer lines. Outdoor drains can become clogged with leaves, dirt, roots, and other debris, causing water backup and potential flooding. Drain jetting is an effective way to clean these outdoor drain systems and allow for proper water flow.
